The basics: how does our body work?
Imagine your body as a powerful machine, and just like any machine, it needs fuel to keep running. For us, that fuel is carbohydrates—carbohydrates are quickly converted into energy, making them ideal for cycling. But how much do we actually need?
But how many carbohydrates do we actually need?
After about 45 to 90 minutes of intensive cycling, our fuel tank is empty. To prevent “bonking” and maintain your performance, it is vital to refuel in time during your cycling trip. How quickly your fuel runs out depends on various factors, such as your physique and the intensity of your effort. Without the right nutrition, this supply cannot be replenished, which can lead to a loss of performance!
That is why we use the following carbohydrate schedule as a rule of thumb:

Looking at the table above, you can see that if you are going on a long bike ride, for example, you need to replenish 90 grams of carbohydrates every hour during the ride.
