You’re all set to go. The sun is shining on your face, your bike is perfectly tuned, and your water bottle is full. But have you actually checked your tire pressure? It might be the least exciting part of your prep, but trust us: the right tire pressure is one of the easiest ways to ride faster, more comfortably, and with more confidence.
Why tire pressure is so important
Your tires are your only point of contact with the road. Everything you feel—speed, traction, comfort—comes through your tires. In short, your tire pressure is incredibly important.
One of the most common causes of unnecessary loss of performance?
- Tires that are overinflated
- or, conversely, underinflated
What are the benefits of proper tire pressure?
- Lower rolling resistance
- Greater comfort (less vibration = less fatigue)
- Better traction when cornering and going downhill
- Lower risk of a flat tire
Faster thanks to… lower pressure?
It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true: tires that are too hard often slow you down. On perfect asphalt, rock-hard tires might roll fast. But in reality? Most roads aren’t perfect. If the pressure is too high:
- Your tire bounces over the asphalt
- You lose energy to vibrations
- Your bike becomes unstable
Result: you lose speed and waste watts.
What is the right tire pressure for you?
This is a personal choice and depends on: your body weight, the tire width (e.g., 25, 28, or 32 mm Vittoria), the road surface, and your personal preference.

Pro tip!
Are you riding on rough asphalt? Lower your tire pressure by 0.3–0.5 bar. You’ll notice: better traction, better control, and often even more speed.
Front and back: small difference, big impact
Your weight isn’t distributed evenly on your bike. When setting your tire pressure, aim for a difference of about 0.2–0.3 bar.
- Rear tire = slightly harder
- Front tire = slightly softer
Why? This provides more comfort up front, better grip in turns, and better balance on the bike.
What do the pros do?
Many cyclists think that pros ride on rock-hard tires. But the opposite is true; pros are increasingly opting for:
- Slightly lower pressure
- Wider tires (28 mm is now standard)
- A greater focus on comfort = speed
Because less vibration means less energy loss and, therefore, the ability to maintain power for longer.
