Cycling to Puig Major, the roof of Mallorca

If you’re looking for a serious climb in Mallorca, you can’t miss Puig Major. With a summit at 880 meters, this is the highest paved climb on the island and a must-ride for any avid cyclist. The climb itself is long, steady, and surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Serra de Tramuntana. From the top, you’ll be rewarded not only with impressive views, but also with a sense of accomplishment you won’t soon forget.

Various distances & elevation gains

Route from Playa de Palma

If you depart from Playa de Palma, you will be treated to a long, varied ride. Via Bunyola or Santa Maria, you will cross the interior and climb via the Tunnel de Monnàber to the top of Puig Major. The route is physically demanding, but the reward – the long climb, the views, and the descent towards Sóller – makes up for everything.

Route from Playa de Muro

Starting from Playa de Muro, the route via Pollença and Lluc leads straight through the mountains to the Gorg Blau reservoir, followed by a steady climb to Puig Major. After the summit, enjoy a stunning descent into Sóller. It’s a perfect ride for those who love elevation, winding roads, and peaceful natural scenery.

Tip: Stop for lunch in Fornalutx or grab a coffee in Sóller.

Is the climb to Puig Major difficult?

The climb is long (14 km), but easy to pace yourself. With an average gradient of approx. 6%, you can ride up at your own pace.

Is the road busy?

The road is quiet in the morning and outside the high season. Watch out for traffic in the tunnel.

Can you drive all the way to the radar station (La Bola)?

No, the gate to La Bola is on military grounds and is closed. During the La Bola event, it is possible to drive all the way to the top.

Can I also do this route with an e-bike (e-racer)?

Certainly, but keep in mind the battery consumption on the long climb. However, it is possible to reserve an extra battery that you can carry in your water bottle holder.
